Cycle Hire Volunteering at Westport Lake from Summer 2013
Green Door is a four year Big Lottery funded project which aims to encourage people, particularly older and disabled people, to make more use of green open spaces in the city for the benefit of their physical and mental wellbeing.
Although it will operate city-wide, the project will be based from a new office and cycle hire facility which will open at Westport Lake summer 2013. The facility will have a range of cycles which are specially designed for use by people with disabilities and long-term illnesses. There
will also be a variety of standard cycles for cyclists of all ages.
The cycle hire facility will be largely staffed by volunteers, and the first training course for cycle volunteers will be held on Thursday 11th April. This training will show volunteers how to match disabled people with the appropriate cycle, and how to help them to become confident cyclists.
A second course will take place on Saturday 27th April. If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Green Door.
People hiring cycles will be asked to stay within the boundaries of Westport Lake – the cycles are not available to take further afield.
If you are interested in the cycle facility, there is a taster day taking place at Westport Lake on Saturday 18th May, where all the cycles will be available to try. Contact Green Door for more information.
Green Door relies on dedicated volunteers. We provide free training, and lots of support, including reimbursement of travel expenses. There is a huge range of volunteer roles available, so there is bound to be something to suit you, no matter what your skills or experience. Hours are completely flexible, so it doesn’t matter if you can spare an hour, a day or a week, we’d love
to have you on board.
